The
initials, GHM, are those of the oldest son of Gordon and Mamie McRae, George
Henry McRae. As a boy he carved them just
inside the door of the barn on the McRae Homestead west of Huxley, Alberta.
Maybe he was just checking out a new jackknife ordered from Eaton's Catalog.
Whatever the reason, it serves as a reminder of the countless times he
would enter there, to milk the cows, harness the horses, or just to clean
out the stalls. And at least once to leave this mark. As the twenty first
century begins, the barn has not been used for over fifty years and is
now showing the ravages of time. The barnyard, once kept almost bare by
the normal farm traffic, now supports waist high growth.
This
piece of board was removed from the barn wall in the summer of year 2000
by George's brother James Marshall. For him, as a wall hanging, it
provides a nostalgic link to those days long ago, and the home where the
three boys, George, Marshall and Earl grew up.
