My reason for setting up this page is the hope that a lot of people outside of Nova Scotia will see it and want to visit us. My primary interest is in the south west half of the province. Even people in Nova Scotia might want to visit other areas. We visited Lunenburg and found the area so beautiful that we go back for a holiday every summer now.
I have no conection with any group, either in the tourist industry, or any other. This set of pages is my own idea and I have done it because I love Yarmouth, in particular and the many villages of South West Nova Scotia in general.
My name, as shown above, is Donald Dunn. I was born in North Bay, Ontario on 11 February, 1928. At the age of 18 I left home and joined the Royal Canadian Navy. I married Marjorie Blades, of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in Halifax, 9 September, 1949.
In 1968 I retired from the Navy after 22 1/2 years, and joined Food and Drugs, Health and Welfare, Canada. I spent my last 19 years before retirement in Ottawa, Ontario. We then moved to Yarmouth.
On 20 July, 1969, the day that Neil Armstrong first stepped on the moon, I had my first lesson as a glider pilot. A few years later I took up power flying as well. Gliders are the best. My time in-flight in gliders is 555 hours with 1,258 flights. Of this time 349 was as first pilot, 24 under instruction and check flights and 182 as an instructor. About 161 of my 330 hours in power aircraft was done towing gliders.
Have you seen the movie "Dolores Claiborne"? The story takes place on an island community outside of Bangor, Maine. The picture was made in Nova Scotia, most of it in Blue Rocks. There is a ferry in the film called "Joshua Sloakum". This boat travels from Long Island to Brier Island at the bottom of the Digby Neck, south of Digby, NS. The Claiborne house is on a small hill in Blue Rocks, outside of Lunenburg. Often the scene shows one of my favorite picture areas. It is an area of small fishing buildings and boats. The main town scenes were taken in Lunenburg and Mahone Bay villages. My wife and I love to watch the film to see the many scenes that we recognize. And it is a very good movie too.
The following pages will include a number of pictures that I have taken in different areas of Nova Scotia. I hope that they will be enjoyed - and maybe will entice people to come and visit our beautiful province.
