HISTORY OF THE HOUSE

The Department of Culture, Recreation and Fitness supports inventories of historic properties. A review of this house was done in October of 1985 by Linda Campbell, the local archivist.

She describes the house as a 1 1/2 storey Gothic Revival style, wood construction, facade clad with narrow clapboard, sides, back and rear one story ell shingle clad. Medium pitch gable roof, central cross gable, paired insert chimneys. Symetrical 3 bay facade, enclosed central entry porch with sidelights and windows in side walls. Most windows 6/6 glazing, plain slanted crowns, dormer window has pediment crown. Cutaway bay window on the north side.

According to Linda's review, the house was built about 1862 for David Weston, a prominent ship-master in the area. Yarmouth shipping was on the increase at this time, bringing much new wealth to the area. This resulted in a building boom which lasted several years during the 1860's.

She did a search of the Registry of Deeds and other records and established the following chronology of ownership. We added the last entry.

History of Ownership 1862-1998

Sue Hutchins and Dan Earle bought the house from Irene Muise, the surviving spouse of Philip who died in 1994. The transfer was recorded on September 21, 1998 as Document # 2342, Book 573, Page 107. We made the house as secure as we could for the winter and traveled in the U.S. for the rest of the fall and winter. We returned on March 24, 1999 to begin renovations.

Philip Muise and Charles Smith were foster children of William Nickerson. They inherited the house jointly and Philip bought Charles' share in 1952. Philip and Irene never lived in the house. Between 1952 when it was purchased by Philip a series of people from around the area have lived here. We are currently trying to establish a chronology of tenants during the 47 years from 1952 until we purchased the property in 1998. We are also doing research in the archives of the Yarmouth County Museum on the original owner, David C. Weston.
